Johnson Pushes Back Pressure To Step Down Ahead Of Police Investigations Over Covid-19 Protocol Negligence

While the British are keen that the current PM Boris Johnson might resign, he isn’t budging from 10 Downing Street, sources have confirmed. The nudging comes when during a parliamentary session the opposition leader Keir Starmer said that it was time Johnson thought about resigning as the Scotland Yard would open its own investigation into parties held during COVID-19 lockdown at Downing Street.

The session could be seen as unpleasant, full of shouts and allegations. Johnson defended his leadership and presented achievements. But in response, the party gate has accused him of ‘demeaning the office of the Prime Minister.’

It seems Johnson’s Conservative government continues to be not in the good books due to certain glitches that happened at the time of the lockdown. One major one was the surprise party for his 56th birthday in the midst of a peaked Covid-19 scare that was heavily criticized and showed recklessness on the part of the UK Prime Minister.

It is believed that Boris Johnson’s reputation has taken a hit since the Covid-19 lockdowns starting, with his surprise birthday celebration adding more fuel to this fire. A formal statement by his office said, “A group of staff working in Number 10 that day gathered briefly in the Cabinet Room after a meeting to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday. He was there for less than 10 minutes.”

A prominent television channel made a claim that the same evening, family friends were hosted upstairs in the Prime Minister's official residence in apparent breach of the rules.

However, Number 10 denied that claim: "This is totally untrue. In line with the rules at the time the Prime Minister hosted a small number of family members outside that evening." A number of his ministers spoke out in his defence even as the rebellion among backbench MPs continued to mount.

An internal Cabinet office inquiry is also slated ahead of these allegations. But Mr. Johnson has made it clear that he has no intentions of resigning before any conclusive decision from these inquires comes through. MPs have been asked not to preempt the outcome, till the concerned police authorities have not presented their findings, only after which the Cabinet office inquiry report will also be presented.
