Ethiopian Schools Closed Down Over Omicron Breakout

The Education minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Berhanu Nega has asked to close all the secondary schools for a week. This announcement was made to allow students help in harvesting crop fields left behind by civilians who enlisted in the military.

Government officials shared that the fighting has destroyed hundreds of schools and more
than 1.2 million students were out of school due to the ongoing conflict in the north. A six-month state of emergency was announced in November to contain a Tigrayan rebel advancement towards the capital, Addis Ababa.

Due to the current situation arising in the north and centre of the country caused by rebel
forces, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has made a call to join the armed forces to defeat the
uprising rebel. Thousands of people have answered his call to join the army.

He called on “all patriotic Ethiopians” to join him in frontline combat against forces loyal to
the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Recently PM Abiy Ahmed has himself joined the frontline to oversee operations against the rebels. He has made a call to rebel soldiers to surrender. In November Prime minister Abiy has said that the peace moves have failed and he announced his decision to combat against the rebels. He also shared “The time necessitates leading the nation through martyrdom. To this end, I will march to the battlefield from tomorrow onwards to lead our defense forces,” Ahmed said in his call to the nation.

“All of you who aspire to be one of Ethiopia’s most admired children, stand up for your
country and join me on the frontline,”. The army has been successful in taken back few key towns and cities across Amhara and Afar regions. Few months ago, Rebels have also occupied Lalibela the site of UN World Heritage, which Army has been able to take back.

Ethiopia is facing food shortage as the major farming areas of Tigray, Afar and Amhara faced disruptions in farming due to ongoing fighting. September to February are a major crop harvesting season in Ethiopia.

Also a major infrastructure of schools have been destroyed by fighting.
The call by Education minister for temporarily close the schools and allow students to help in harvesting is done due to help the Ethiopian’s on war front. Currently the schools are closed for a week only.  The order was given by Addis Ababa's education ministry, the Xinhua news agency reported citing local broadcaster Fana.
