Elnaz Rekabi Might Have Been Pressured To Retract Statement: BBC Report
Media is spilling beans of governmental pressure that has forced the Iranian athlete to retract from her previous support to the anti-hijab worldwide outcry
According to BBC Persia, the rock climber from Iran, Elnaz Rekabi was forced into giving a statement that she was sorry for not having adhered to the hijab rule set in by the Iranian authorities.
She had said
that her hijab had fallen off, which looks extremely unplausible for someone
who might have worn a hijab all her life. The act of revolt was retracted as an
unintentional mistake, for which it is now being said, that she was coaxed into
retracting her statement.
The BBC source said Rekabi
had been detained in a room at Iran's National Olympic Committee building with
agents present until she met the minister. She is now under house arrest, but
the authorities said she is staying at home because she is in need of rest, the
source said.
The lady athlete had also
disappeared and then resurfaced apologizing on open television, which seems to
come when there has been apparent threat to her imprisonment and her athlete
brother as well.
She has now come
out to explain as to why she didn’t wear the hijab and that it was something that
had been done ‘unintentionally’. Fears have been growing over the safety of
Elnaz Rekabi after she disobeyed the strict rules of the Islamic Republic.
One really
wonders as to the truth in the matter, as she has now given a statement of her ‘unintentional’
violation. The Iranian government has confirmed that she has returned back to
Tehran recently and is not under arrest. Whether her passport and phone has been
confiscated remains unknown.
An anti-hijab
rally has been going on in Iran and across the world. The intention has been to
revolt against the government’s moral policing over the way women dress up and
controlling their lives. A young girl recently lost her life over the fact that
she was not wearing her hijab properly.
Ms. Rekabi had
competed without a hijab amid nationwide anti-government protests against their
compulsory use in Iran. The deadly protests gripping the country were sparked
by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody.
