Will Hezbollah Become Irrelevant Soon?
The growing amity seems to be becoming a reason that Hezbollah as a party in Lebanon might be losing their power and relevance. Regional realignment seems to be adding up towards November 29 running up of the election time and the relevance of the Iran backed party seems to be becoming dim.
Of the major regional development seems to be factors
like alleged actions by Iran’s proxies in Iraq. These include assassination
attempt against Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi as well as Hezbollah’s
activities in Lebanon.
And then angry comments made by Hezbollah leader
Hassan Nasrallah were quickly proven wrong and not gone down well with Lebanese
either. Nasrallah has said he was in the loop about recent Saudi-Iranian talks
in Iraq. He claimed that they did not mention “Lebanon or Hezbollah, neither
with regards to Yemen or other issues”. However, Nasrallah’s claim reflects
Hezbollah’s anxiety over deals taking place behind its back.
So what are the deals happening behind its back? For
one, there was a meeting between Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign
Affairs and International Co-operation, and Syrian President Bashar Al Assad in
Damascus. Indeed, this has been a landmark move.
Following the visit, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein
Amir-Abdollahian and Sheikh Abdullah had a phone call. At the same time, Iran
staged large-scale military drills in the Red Sea and the Gulf near the Strait
of Hormuz, as the UAE, Bahrain and Israel held joint military exercises,
led by the US Central Command in the Red Sea and the Gulf, the first of it.
Now, Gulf states are not waiting around for Iran to
move; but they are making movements on their own. There are conversations
happening between Saudi and Iran as well with focus on the Yemeni issue, given
its implications for Saudi security. But Lebanon is not on anyone’s agenda. There
are also broader security talks on the national security of Arab states,
particularly Iraq.
