Indian Perspective To Soft Power In Paraguay

Under Modi leadership India has found a smart way to get back to China and develop its place in the world order

India is playing a kind of smooth politics to earn its place in the world arena. As a nation that was under British rule for almost 100 years, has taken a long time to stand back on its feet and be taken seriously.

The Covid-19 situation has given the Centre a chance to prove how it needs to be taken seriously and cannot be ignored anymore.  For this, India started to send off consignments of Covid-19 ingeniously developed vaccine candidate to its neighbours.

Paraguay was also a well thought out strategy. But Taiwan has said that India did not in order to wade off the China lure. It is a well-known fact that China had been publicly stating that Paraguay – Taiwan's diplomatic ally – would be able to receive COVID-19 vaccines, if it severed ties with Taiwan, foreign minister Joseph Wu claimed.

For China, it is important to keep pushing Taiwan away from developing its own trade alliances. So, India coming closer and helping it strengthen its diplomacy indeed is a slap on Beijing's face. India has helped Taiwan help Paraguay by supplying Covaxin at a time when the South American nation was tempted by a Chinese offer.

While India has not put pressure on anyone, China can use it for its own power gain. India has a different approach to gaining power, and under Modi's leadership, one can see both the use of an iron fist and soft power as well.

Paraguay had been given the hanging carrot by China when it asked the former smaller country to side-track its relations with Taiwan so that Beijing could supply vaccines enough to cover its whole population.

But India has won it all- even the US state department statement has went in its favour. The spokesperson told media that the US was working with "Paraguay and like-minded partners to support pandemic response efforts."

Paraguyan president Abdo had expressed thanks to India for the supply of 100,000 doses of vaccine.

It is also worth noting that India is getting support from Australia as well. The United States, India, Japan and Australia are working to break the monopoly that China has held as a powerful nation, by having entered a billion dose vaccine pact.
