Why Is Scotland Investing In Rewilding?

As the world is moving towards replenishment and renewal, lot of countries are working to reverse environmental damage

Scotland is one such nation that is working towards 're-wilding' itself. The country acknowledges how it has lost over two thirds of its forest cover over half a century. It is therefore no surprise that around 40 per cent of plant species are threatened with extinction and scientists say we may be losing them faster than they can find, name and study them.

So the country is moving towards what they call as conservative growth or rewilding, where you give a habitat time to recoup and recuperate, replenishing itself through its initial mix. Some believe, bringing back the wolves and lynx is an excellent way to get the habitat going again.

This is being supplemented with tree planting schemes, active conservation efforts, and high tech carbon capture solutions all look to help tackle biodiversity loss and the climate crisis.

So creating the right conditions for rewilding is the easiest way to ensure mother nature comes back to its original form. The process could also mean allowing forests to regenerate and preventing the fragmentation of rivers.

Something like this was done in the US and saw a dramatic good effect on the environment. Rewilding had a dramatic effect on the Yellowstone National Park where, wolves that were earlier hunted to near extinction at the start of the 20th century, were re-introduced. Once this was done, their prey that had multiplied, started to reduce,  bringing the natural flora and fauna as well as water flow back to the rivers.

It sounds like magic but it was nothing but common sense and going back to the basics of the origin of life itself.

Rewilding has become an increasingly popular movement in Scotland over the last few years. Politicians are being called on by the Scottish Rewilding Alliance (SWA) to create policies that would see the country become the world’s first “rewilding nation”
