Bangladesh Returns The Favour To India In Hard Times

It is a favour well returned. As India comes under pressure for emergency medication to tackle second wave of Covid-19, Bangladesh has come to its rescue

In March itself, India gifted more than 1 million free doses to Bangladesh. Whether it was good trade politics or not, the fact is that the favour is now being return in the form of Remdesivir vials. They have promised 10,000 such vials.

The doses of Remdesivir have been produced by Beximco, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies of Bangladesh, which has also partnered with the Serum Institute of India to provide Covishield vaccine to Bangladesh.

The lot has already been handed over by the Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata at the Indian border port of Petrapole.

This was the first part of the medical assistance from Bangladesh for COVID-hit India. This is likely to be followed by a large number of Vitamin C, D, Zinc supplements, N95 masks and possibly other critically needed medicines for the treatment of the COVID-19 affected.

On his part, PM Narendra Modi made his first international visit after a pandemic lockdown situation in March 2021 to Bangladesh.  It was a 2-day official trip to meet the Bangladesh PM.

While India had said that it would prioritise its domestic demand before helping its neighbouring nations with free vaccines, it had gone out of his way to make a generous statement by donating them as it could get things under control. But the new variant has taken its toll. At the moment, Modi is under pressure to tackle the leading opposition party saying that would like India to go on a nationwide lockdown.

While Modi is trying to explain that the wave is finally flattening, political pressure might see India go into another lockdown situation.
