German Leadership Is In Safe Hands, Again

Continuous dose of sound leadership is what Germany is looking forward to sail through the aftermath of the Covid-19 effect

Armin Laschet mirrors outgoing Merkel's thought and leadership

German chancellor Angela Merkel is going to be replaced by someone who comes from her own league- that is saving grace for Germany.

Merkel's center-right party has finally elected Armin Laschet. He is considered a ‘pragmatic governor’ of Germany's most populous state. He brings in the message of continuity months before an election in which voters will decide who becomes the new chancellor.

The sense of stability does not go away for Germany that has enjoyed sound and stable governance under a woman’s leadership to close to two decades. If it wasn’t for Angela Merkel deciding not to contest elections again in 2016, she might as well have been running a third term.

The two other who were promising didn’t stand a chance and were moved out of an online voting battle. That included Friedrich Merz who was most promising from the Christian Democratic Union. Laschet defeated the conservative in a 521 to 466 battle. The prominent lawmaker Norbert Roettgen, was eliminated in a first round of voting.

This win does not mean Laschet is the chancellor already- but his winning does brighten his chances the most along with the guarantee that he will have a say into who becomes the chancellor after all.

The biggest concern has been as to who can fill in Merkel’s shoes. It seems that the leadership has been of concern to the whole world that has seen some incredible decision making prowess in Merkel’s time. This would include her treatment of the migration challenge and the handling of the pandemic.

Armin has been Merkel’s ally and therefore one can look at some mirroring when he comes onboard, if he does. He has been seen to resemble Merkel in policy and style.

The son of a coal mining foreman, 59-year-old Laschet graduated in law, once edited a Catholic newspaper and was legislator in the Bundestag as well as the European Parliament before being elected premier of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2017. Germany has had reasons to elect someone who understands the roots and therefore the challenges of an evolving Germany. Merkel’s grounded mature leadership will be seen resonating once again in Berlin.
