How Sports Spirit Learns To Come Alive Virtually
With corona virus making quarantine a necessity, a lot of sports men and sports enthusiasts are moving towards E-sports to keep the enthusiasm alive
Sportsmen and enthusiasts are fast moving towards internet space to keep itself going |
The
novel virus outbreak has lead the world to discover a new way of functioning
and a new way to life altogether. From companies redesigning their working
structures, daily routine to learning to work from home, everything is going
through a paradigm shift.
One
such challenge is being faced by sportsmen as well. But Formula 1 drivers and
other sports stars have said to have found a great way of keeping themselves
engaged and active, despite the global lock down that has been done to contain
the virus from spreading.
For
example the Australia Grand Prix driver McLaren driver Lando Norris has busied
himself with the online version of an e-race. That is the new way to keep you
engaged and not bored, will the lock down has cancelled and postponed most
sporting events worldwide. Quite literally, the Norris, Courtois and Formula E
driver Stoffel Vandoorne were reported to have taken on E-sports professionals
and YouTube stars in a virtual Australian Grand Prix recently.
"E-sports
is a very fast growing and exciting industry and what we wanted to do is put on
a fun race for fans that are without racing in Formula 1," Jamie
MacLaurin, founder of Veloce Esports - which is running the event - told BBC
Sport recently.
No one is letting the enthusiasm die down.
Surprisingly, while players pit themselves against each other in virtual space,
still maintaining true sportsmanship, even BBC Radio 5 live commentators Jack
Nicholls and Jolyon Palmer decided to lend their voices for another virtual
race that had Max Verstappen and ex-F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya competing in.
Meanwhile, cyclists and footballers are also
joining the new form of competition and keeping themselves upbeat. Professional
cyclists are also working from home – and are learning to enjoy themselves as
they learn to host or take part in virtual events. Geraint Thomas, winner of
the 2018 Tour de France, has been hosting his own races while Vuelta a Espana
winner Simon Yates and his twin brother Adam have almost daily events planned,
with riders from their men's and women's squads taking part.
Sunday's Seville football derby between Sevilla
and Real Betis that was postponed because of the corona virus outbreak saw its
performance in the virtual world. Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias and Seville
left-back Sergio Reguilon take each other on at FIFA20.
This new-age phenomenon is the test of humanity
and will probably continue till June, until a vaccine could be brought out into
the market. However, medical
professionals have estimated trial, test and conclusive delivery of a vaccine
to take no less than 12-15 months.
